Fresh bread

One of my favorite things about colder weather is how much more enjoyable it is to cook, since I don’t mind heating up the house by running the oven.

Recently, I’ve been making bread. Lots of it. Sammy helps me measure and then the smell of fresh bread fills the house all afternoon. Is there anything better?

And yet — and this might seem counter-intuitive — waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread in the morning is horrible — simply horrible. Why? Because it makes me soooo hungry. If I use the bread machine and set it to have fresh bread ready at 5:30 or 6, then by 4 or 5 in the morning, I’m awoken by the sweet smell wafting through the house. Oh, the humanity!

Still, it’s a small price to pay for fresh bread without the use of preservatives and corn syrup and other undesirables. Mmmm.
